Willard Pond is one of New Hampshire 's treasures. Nestled in a
small valley there is no development on the lake and a is part of a wildlife sanctuary. The water in
this pond is exceptionally clean and clear. I tend to spend a fair amount of my
time puttering along the shore and looking down trying to spot fish. If you
paddle to the northeast end there is a small stream that feeds in, you'll find
crayfish and lizards lurking about. Another place with a protected loon nest
and they have been out and about every visit.
Access to the pond, I don't want to say challenging, but is
a bit more of a process than most. There is a public beach access but there is
no long term parking in this location. There is space to unload right next to
the water but you must then move your vehicle a short distance back down the
access road and walk back. Garmin claims about 820 ft.
I had one bad experience here, but no real fault of the
lake. I mentioned it sits in a valley and with any valley can be prone to a
wind tunnel effect if the wind direction is right. On this occurrence when I
got to the far end the light breeze turned into a pretty steady wind and the
wind tunnel was in full affect. The paddle back was choppy and exhausting! So
just watch the weather when you're there.
