Anyone who knows anything
about Lake Winnipesaukee knows it is a massive
body of water. I've ever only paddled a very small portion of it. A good friend
of mine has a place on the lake so it makes for a very convenient put in. I did
list a local boat ramp below which works very well for the general public. Moultonborough Bay is the most northern point of the
lake. Nothing special about that, just a neat little fact. What I like about
this area is that it's kind of an offshoot from the main body of the lake, it
is a bay after all. Because of that it's a little bit quieter than if you were
to go out into the more open areas. This area does have the same problem as
anywhere on Winnipesaukee, if you're crossing a large expanse of open water, do
it fast and keep your eyes open for the motor boats. But on the flip side, it's
not that hard to get away from the really busy areas. There are several islands
and alcoves that provide some solitude. If you go to the northern most point,
right by the boat ramp, you will find the feed form Less Pond. Just a quiet
little spot I like to hit when I'm there.
This is the only portion
of Winnipesaukee I've ever been on, but from my experience and discussion with
locals, it's one of the premier areas. As I touched on earlier, this is due to
the shape of the bay and that this area of the lake is mostly used by locals
only. If you want to get on this lake and stay away from the party crowd, this
is your best bet.
